FreeSpeak Spark

Helping young people use
their voice to create
real-world impact.

Through Spark, FreeSpeak expands access to communication for impact by combining sponsored programming with targeted financial support. A student-led initiative supporting grassroots programs that help young people use communication to advocate, lead, and solve real problems in their communities.

This could look like a debate club, a girls' leadership workshop, a community awareness campaign, or a storytelling initiative — any space where young people are learning to use their voice to influence change.

"Every person deserves the tools to speak with confidence — not just those who can afford to learn them."

Small support. Real impact.

FreeSpeak Spark is FreeSpeak Academy's impact partnership initiative, running three times a year. Each cycle, we partner with two community-led projects, providing sponsored support — including $300 funding — to help bring their work to life. These partnerships align with our mission: helping marginalized individuals and groups build the skills and confidence to advocate for themselves and drive meaningful change in their communities.

We believe change happens at the grassroots level — in after-school classrooms, community centers, living rooms, and online spaces where someone decides to step up and lift others. FreeSpeak Spark exists to turn those moments into momentum.

Built for communities
too often left out.

FreeSpeak Spark partners with programs serving youth and young adults up to college age within historically underrepresented or under-resourced communities.

Economically Disadvantaged

Programs removing financial barriers so low-income youth and young adults up to college age can access communication training and leadership development.

Women & Girls

Projects that build speaking confidence and leadership skills in young women and girls, from middle school through college.

LGBTQ+ & Non-Binary

Safe, affirming programs that help queer and non-binary youth and young adults find their voice, build confidence, and lead.

Marginalized Communities

Young people and college-age students from communities facing systemic barriers — including immigrant youth, young people of color, and those with disabilities.

Underserved Schools

Title I schools and under-resourced classrooms where students lack access to speech, debate, or confidence-building programs — from elementary through high school.

What your $300
can unlock.

This support is designed to complement mission aligned programs and partnerships — flexible, immediate resources that remove the first barrier between a voice and real impact.

Spark partnerships are open to any community-led project making a real difference — whether you're a registered nonprofit, a Title I school, an unregistered grassroots group, or an international organization. What matters to us is the work, the community you serve, and how you'll use the support.

What we look for.

FreeSpeak Spark partners with a small number of organizations each cycle based on alignment and potential impact. No application experience required — just a real project and a clear community it serves.

Strong candidates

  • Community-led projects making a real difference — nonprofits, grassroots groups, schools, or international organizations
  • Projects that directly serve one or more of our focus communities
  • Programs led by or in partnership with members of the community being served
  • Clear, specific plan for how sponsored support will be used
  • Communication or confidence-building as a core component
  • Projects that use communication as a tool for advocacy, awareness, or community change
  • New or early-stage programs that need sponsored support to launch

Ready to apply?

Applications take under 15 minutes. We read every submission. If your project aligns with our mission, we want to hear from you.

Not sure if your work fits? We'd still love to hear from you—reach out and tell us what you're building.

Things you might
want to know.

Can I apply more than once?
Yes — you can apply in multiple quarters. If you weren't selected in a prior cycle we encourage you to apply again with any updates to your project or additional context.
What can the $300 be used for?
You can use the sponsored support for materials, supplies, program costs, venue rental, printing, tech tools, transportation, or facilitator stipends — anything directly tied to running your program or initiative. We don't restrict specific line items as long as the use aligns with your project description.
How do I know if my project aligns with FreeSpeak's mission?
FreeSpeak's mission is to develop communication as a tool for confidence, advocacy, and real-world impact in marginalized communities — including youth, economically disadvantaged individuals, women and girls, and LGBTQ+/non-binary people. If your project builds speaking skills, advocacy capacity, or self-expression in any of these groups, it's likely a strong fit.
What does the partner update involve?
At the close of your cycle, partners are invited to share a brief update so we can celebrate their work — a short account of what was accomplished, who was reached, and what was learned. This helps us measure real-world impact and shapes how the program grows. Photos are welcome but never required. We would love to celebrate your work on our website.
When is the next application window?
Applications are open year-round. When you apply, you select which cycle you are applying for — Spring, Fall, or Winter. Each cycle's review and selection happens within its respective month: Spring in April, Fall in August, and Winter in December. Applications are only accepted for the current or immediately upcoming cycle — you cannot apply for a cycle that is more than one term away.
What if I'm not sure my program fits?
If your work helps young people build confidence, voice, or leadership in any way, we encourage you to reach out or apply. We're happy to help you figure out fit.
